Brazilian right-wing presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro effectively conceded defeat on the 26th, local time. The shift came shortly after he said US President Donald Trump would not intervene to help him.

Bolsonaro's objection concerned an extension of voting hours. He alleged that extending Sunday's voting because of bad weather and requests from both campaigns was an attempt to manipulate the election. Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin, formerly President Lula da Silva's personal lawyer, made the extension decision.

Bolsonaro maintained his intention to challenge the outcome through legal action. He said he would file a lawsuit alleging that Lula da Silva had abused his position as incumbent president to influence voting.

Brazil's electoral court offered a different explanation. Its president, Cassio Nunes Marques, who was appointed by Bolsonaro's father, said the extension of voting hours had not affected the election result.

An aide to Flavio Bolsonaro, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he decided to stop pursuing election annulment after meeting with aides. The aide said Lula's winning margin of 4.4 million votes left little chance of success.

Flavio Bolsonaro, Brazil's defeated right-wing presidential candidate, claimed on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, that he was the country's rightful leader after leaving for the United States to begin a self-imposed exile.

Leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won Brazil's runoff election on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026.

In a statement published on his X account, Bolsonaro claimed he was the elected president and alleged electoral fraud. He accused those he said had stolen the election of establishing a tyranny.

He said he would lead the opposition from there. In a subsequent statement, he revised his description of himself from president to leader.

Rogerio Marinho, the leader of Bolsonaro's Liberal Party in the Senate, expressed solidarity with the former candidate. Speaking to reporters in Brasilia, he described Bolsonaro as a political exile.

He nevertheless distanced himself from Bolsonaro's statement and declined to endorse the electoral-fraud allegations.

He said the Liberal Party could not make that claim, adding that there was no evidence for it.
