Romanian president says drones struck two ships

Romanian President Nicusor Dan said two ships had been struck by drones but declined to identify the drones as Russian.

Romanian President Nicusor Dan said two ships had been struck by drones, but declined to say whether the drones were Russian.

Romania's naval authority said seven of the San Marino-flagged tanker Wine Trader's 12 crew members were missing and five had been rescued. The ship was hit 13 nautical miles southeast of the Sulina canal, one mile outside Romanian waters.

The interior ministry said it had sent two Black Hawk helicopters and two ships carrying medical staff to the search and rescue mission.

The ministry said very large waves were preventing rescuers from carrying out a rescue safely at that time.

The Comoros-flagged chemical and oil tanker Yara J also caught fire late Wednesday inside Romanian waters, 8 to 10 miles southeast of Sulina. All its crew were safe. Romanian authorities initially said it was unclear whether that vessel had been attacked.

Both tankers were empty of cargo and caught fire near the mouth of the Danube River's Sulina Canal, where ships often wait to pass because of weather and congestion.

Bulgaria to summon Russian ambassador after ships struck off its coast

Prime Minister Rumen Radev said two ships were struck off Bulgaria's coast on Tuesday, October 13, and that he would summon the Russian ambassador over the incident.

Prime Minister Rumen Radev said two ships were struck off the Bulgarian coast on Tuesday, October 13. He said he would summon the Russian ambassador over the latest such incident in the Black Sea.

Radev said on social media that a Ukrainian-owned cargo ship had been hit by three aerial drones and another ship was hit and sank shortly afterward. He said Bulgaria lacked clear evidence to accuse a specific party, while suggesting the outcome benefited Russia.

He identified the first vessel as the Malta-flagged Chelsea 3 and said all 15 crew members, seven Ukrainians and eight Azerbaijanis, had been rescued. Radev said one crew member from the second vessel had been rescued, but supplied no further details. He condemned the attacks near Bulgarian territorial waters as unacceptable.

Bulgaria said Monday that it had requested technical assistance to determine the origin of the series of attacks. In letters to EU and NATO leaders, Radev asked for the issue to receive priority attention and said Bulgaria had also sought help from the European Maritime Safety Agency.
