A cyberattack hit refrigeration systems at hundreds of French supermarkets, raising temperatures inside the units and spoiling millions of euros worth of frozen and refrigerated food. The damage extended across hundreds of stores.
The software lets stores manage refrigeration and freezer units remotely. During the attack, the units were instructed to heat to as much as 120 degrees Fahrenheit and remain hot, disrupting the function of keeping products cold.
Dominique Schelcher, chief executive of Coopérative U, said in an early Monday social media post that the attack was under investigation. His statement described an investigation underway.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's office said he was personally monitoring the situation and had asked ANSSI, the country's cybersecurity agency, to investigate.
Christophe Hansen, the European Union's agriculture and food commissioner, also condemned the attack.
