O'Leary agreed to halve proposed campus to about 20,000 acres

By June 4, O'Leary had agreed to cut the proposed campus from 40,000 acres to about 20,000 acres. The agreement concerned the size of the proposed development.

The proposed Stratos Project is planned for Box Elder County in northwest Utah. Its original 40,000-acre site was about half the size of Salt Lake City. The surrounding area is dominated by ranching, farming and open space, north of the shrinking Great Salt Lake.

O'Leary backed the project, saying it could strengthen the local economy and increase U.S. computing and energy capacity. The plan included a 9-gigawatt AI data center, a natural gas plant to power it and other possible facilities.

Hundreds attended a Box Elder County Commission meeting in May, when commissioners unanimously approved the project. Residents raised concerns about its scale, energy and water use, possible environmental effects and the time available to examine the plans.

Developers said they would use technologies to reduce water consumption and improve the facility's power efficiency. They also said the project would follow federal and state environmental regulations.
