Araghchi said Sunday that Iran had seen the U.S. president's initial reaction, but that mediators had not yet conveyed anything to the Iranian side.

Donald Trump said he had rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week and resume nuclear talks in exchange for lifting the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said Sunday that the country's conditions were clear and that any move to reopen the Strait of Hormuz depended on those conditions being fulfilled.

Iran also wants the United States to allow the release of some frozen Iranian assets, restore a waiver lifting sanctions on Iranian oil exports and observe a ceasefire on all fronts, alongside lifting the naval blockade.

Trump rejects Iran's proposal to reopen Hormuz within a week

U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping within a week.

U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping within a week.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday at the UN in New York that an agreement depended on meeting necessary conditions. He said those conditions were contained in a memorandum of understanding signed by the two countries in June.

The June memorandum was intended to establish a ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz at least partially.

The 14-point agreement stated that Iran would never possess a nuclear weapon. It also provided for the United States, Iran and their allies to end military operations on all fronts, alongside provisions to end a U.S. naval blockade and other sanctions.

The waterway normally carries around a fifth of the world's gas and oil supply. It has been effectively closed since war broke out in February.

Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi presented the American proposal to President Masoud Pezeshkian at Wednesday's cabinet meeting. Her statement identified the recipient and the setting in which the proposal was presented.

Iran proposed a seven-day ceasefire and a phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz last week. The proposal depended on the United States meeting conditions in a mid-June memorandum of understanding that collapsed after several weeks. Trump publicly rejected Iran's proposal.

On Monday in New York, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran's plan had been conveyed to the Americans through a Qatari intermediary. He said Iran was waiting for an official American response through that intermediary despite the president's public remarks.

Before the war, around a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passed through the Strait of Hormuz. Since the conflict began, Tehran has attempted to block commercial shipping and fired on vessels it accuses of crossing without authorization.
