Trump rejects Iran's proposal to reopen Hormuz within a week

U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping within a week.

U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping within a week.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday at the UN in New York that an agreement depended on meeting necessary conditions. He said those conditions were contained in a memorandum of understanding signed by the two countries in June.

The June memorandum was intended to establish a ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz at least partially.

The 14-point agreement stated that Iran would never possess a nuclear weapon. It also provided for the United States, Iran and their allies to end military operations on all fronts, alongside provisions to end a U.S. naval blockade and other sanctions.

The waterway normally carries around a fifth of the world's gas and oil supply. It has been effectively closed since war broke out in February.

Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume talks on its nuclear program in seven days if the United States lifts its naval blockade, waives sanctions on Iranian oil sales and observes a ceasefire that includes Lebanon.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi outlined the proposal at a private gathering on September 24, 2026, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, according to an attendee.

The proposal resembles an agreement reached in June but calls for a faster timetable. That earlier agreement provided for a 60-day interim period and quickly collapsed as Iran resumed attacks on shipping in the strait.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States would exchange ideas and messages if an opportunity arose. His statement expressed willingness to communicate.

Iran said on Sunday, September 27, 2026, that only diplomacy could resolve its conflict with the United States and Israel. U.S. President Donald Trump had said he rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the fighting.

Araqchi said mediators handling Iran's talks with the United States had not officially conveyed a U.S. rejection of the proposal, despite Trump's public statements.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on social media that reopening the Strait of Hormuz depended on Iran's conditions being met. He said a negotiated solution was the only way out of the deadlock.

On Friday, September 25, Araqchi told reporters at the United Nations that the proposed agreement would start a seven-day countdown to reopening the strait and a pause in regional fighting.

Araghchi said Sunday that Iran had seen the U.S. president's initial reaction, but that mediators had not yet conveyed anything to the Iranian side.

Donald Trump said he had rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week and resume nuclear talks in exchange for lifting the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said Sunday that the country's conditions were clear and that any move to reopen the Strait of Hormuz depended on those conditions being fulfilled.

Iran also wants the United States to allow the release of some frozen Iranian assets, restore a waiver lifting sanctions on Iranian oil exports and observe a ceasefire on all fronts, alongside lifting the naval blockade.
