U.S. President Donald Trump posted a map on Truth Social on Friday labeling the Strait of Hormuz “Trump Strait.” He had previously posted a map in August suggesting the waterway could become U.S. territory, and had publicly endorsed the idea of declaring it a territory.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said normal maritime passage could be restored within seven days if Washington accepted Tehran's conditions. The proposal calls for the United States to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales and observe a ceasefire that includes Lebanon. Araghchi said the seven-day clock would begin upon U.S. acceptance.

Trump has argued that the blockade gives Washington control over the strait. He also said Iran could disrupt shipping by placing mines in the water, while maintaining that the U.S. blockade had been effective.

Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume talks on its nuclear program in seven days if the United States lifts its naval blockade, waives sanctions on Iranian oil sales and observes a ceasefire that includes Lebanon.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi outlined the proposal at a private gathering on September 24, 2026, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, according to an attendee.

The proposal resembles an agreement reached in June but calls for a faster timetable. That earlier agreement provided for a 60-day interim period and quickly collapsed as Iran resumed attacks on shipping in the strait.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States would exchange ideas and messages if an opportunity arose. His statement expressed willingness to communicate.
