Star Trek: The Next Generation
Star Trek: The Next Generation is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry. The third television series in the Star Trek franchise, it was inspired by Star Trek: The Original Series.
How it works
During its original run, the series was broadcast in first-run syndication: individual television stations aired it on varying dates and at varying times.
History and changes
Star Trek: The Next Generation was announced on October 10, 1986. Its cast was announced in May 1987, before the series began broadcasting that September.
The original television run began on September 28, 1987, and ended on May 23, 1994, spanning 178 episodes over seven seasons.
Characters from The Next Generation returned in four films—Star Trek Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)—and in the television series Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023).
Scope and limitations
The series introduced a new Enterprise crew led by Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Other crew members included William Riker, played by Jonathan Frakes; Data, played by Brent Spiner; and Worf, played by Michael Dorn.
Set in the latter third of the 24th century, when Earth belongs to the United Federation of Planets, the series follows the Starfleet starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) as it explores the Alpha and Beta quadrants of the Milky Way.
