Renfe
Renfe is Spain's national railway operator.
History and changes
In the early 1980s, Spain committed to developing Cercanías commuter rail in large urban areas and a high-speed railway network. The Madrid–Seville AVE high-speed service opened in 1992.
In 2012, the narrow-gauge railways managed by FEVE were divided between Renfe, which absorbed their operations, and ADIF, which absorbed their infrastructure.
Renfe traces its origins to the reconstruction and nationalisation of Spain's railway industry, which created the Red Nacional de Ferrocarriles Españoles in 1941.
Background and related concepts
Spain separated railway operations from infrastructure management in January 2005, in line with emerging European Union policy on opening railway markets to competition. Renfe's corporate history identifies 2005 as the year it became independent of infrastructure management.
