Pavel Chekov
Pavel Andreievich Chekov is a fictional character in the Star Trek universe.
Roles and functions
In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Chekov has been promoted to lieutenant and transferred to the duties of tactical officer and chief of security.
In the original series, Chekov is a young ensign serving as the Enterprise's navigator. He also substitutes for Spock at the science officer station when necessary.
History and changes
Chekov's first television appearance was in “Amok Time,” the first episode broadcast in the original series' second season. “Catspaw” was the first episode filmed with the character, but it aired later.
Scope and limitations
Spinoff novels extend Chekov's career beyond his screen roles, but those novels are not considered canon in the Star Trek universe. William Shatner's novels depict him reaching admiral's rank and serving as Commander in Chief of Starfleet.
The 2009 Star Trek film establishes an alternate timeline. In that version, Yelchin's Chekov is a 17-year-old prodigy whose mathematical ability helps resolve events in the film.
Walter Koenig portrayed Chekov in the second and third seasons of the original Star Trek series and the first seven Star Trek films. Anton Yelchin played the character in the 2009 reboot and its sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond.
Background and related concepts
In a production memo, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry argued that the Enterprise needed a young crew member to bring youthful attitudes and perspectives, identifying Chekov as a character who could serve that purpose.
