Vatican says Pope Leo XIV has voted in U.S. elections

The Vatican announced Friday that Pope Leo XIV had voted in the upcoming U.S. elections, becoming the first pope to do so.

Pope Leo XIV has voted in the upcoming U.S. elections, the Vatican announced Friday. The American pontiff is the first pope to vote in U.S. elections, according to the announcement.

The Vatican said Leo had exercised his voting rights as a United States citizen whenever he was eligible. It described participation in elections as a practice he had maintained over time.

The Vatican statement also said Leo voted during his years living in Peru whenever he was eligible. It explained that he believes citizens have both the right and the duty to take part in democratic processes.

Voting records list him under his legal name, Robert Francis Prevost, in New Lenox, a Chicago suburb where his brother John lives. His voting history includes participation in both Republican and Democratic primaries, as well as the 2024 presidential election.
