NSW selects Teralba mine site as preferred train factory location
The government named a former mine at Teralba as its preferred factory site, choosing it over the Broadmeadow locomotive depot in Newcastle.

The New South Wales government has chosen a former coalmine site in Lake Macquarie for its planned state-owned train factory.
The government announced Tuesday that the former mine at Teralba, owned by Macquarie Coal, was its preferred location. It selected the site over the Broadmeadow locomotive depot in Newcastle.
The government said a preliminary assessment found Teralba offered more space and flexibility for manufacturing, assembly, commissioning and on-site train testing, with room for future expansion.
The facility is intended to build the next generation of NSW passenger trains, beginning with replacements for the Tangara fleet.
The government said it would undertake detailed site investigations and due diligence with Glencore, a part-owner of Macquarie Coal, to allow further planning, design and procurement work to begin.
Broadmeadow remains an alternative while detailed investigations, due diligence and acquisition activities at Teralba continue.
A completion timeline for the facility has not been finalised.
