Elon Musk said Monday that he will give a SpaceX share to every child in the United States beginning next year. His statement describes a future distribution.
Musk provided few details in Monday's post. SpaceX began trading publicly in June, and its stock traded at about $146 a share on Friday.
The U.S. Census Bureau puts the number of children in the United States at about 73 million.
Musk holds a 48.4% beneficial stake in SpaceX, representing about 4.8 billion shares. Including unvested awards and stock options brings his share count to 6.4 billion.
The announcement followed Anthropic's Sunday pledge to commit at least 5% of its shares to a Public Benefit Fund. Responding to that pledge, Musk recommended distributing shares directly to the public.
