Students help Florida girl realize her Halloween costume idea
Students built an angel throne around Kaelyn's wheelchair, adding wings and letting her choose its appearance ahead of the school's October 10 Trunk-or-Treat event.
A group of 25 eighth graders helped nine-year-old Florida schoolgirl Kaelyn Goodman realize her Halloween costume idea. She wanted to dress as a princess angel but had been worried about how her wheelchair would fit into the outfit.
The older students made the wheelchair central to the costume, designing an angel throne with wings instead of concealing the chair. Kaelyn was able to choose its appearance, and the work was finished for the school's annual Trunk-or-Treat event on October 10.
The costume project was developed through Babcock Neighborhood School's Project-Based Learning initiative. The initiative encourages students to use what they learn in the classroom to address practical situations.
Kaelyn's parents said the students asked about her favorite colors, discussed her ideas and listened to her preferences before finishing the costume. Rather than deciding for her, they sought her input on what she would enjoy.
