Capital-region housing starts total 99,000, or 37% of annual target
Housing starts in the capital region totaled 99,000 as of the second week of October this year, representing 37% of the government's annual target of 268,000 homes.

Construction had started on 99,000 homes in the capital region as of the second week of October, against the government's target of 268,000 starts this year. This represents 37% of the annual target, which the government presented through three housing supply plans over the past year or so.
By sector, construction had started on 16,200 public housing units against a target of 62,000, reaching 26.1% of the target. Starts on newly built homes to be purchased for rental totaled about 13,000, or 31% of the target, while private redevelopment projects recorded 17,000 starts, or 23.6% of their target.
The land ministry said starts were concentrated in the fourth quarter because Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) began construction after preparing sites in the first half, from January through June. It said private redevelopment projects were also concentrated toward year-end and forecast nearly 120,000 construction starts in the fourth quarter.
The government forecast cumulative construction starts of 218,000–235,000 by year-end. That represents 81–88% of this year's target of 268,000. Jung Woo-jin, head of the land ministry's housing supply promotion headquarters, said public-sector volume, led by LH, was expected to reach close to 100% of its target, but some volume in Gyeonggi Province and Incheon was falling out of the private redevelopment total.
