Massad Boulos, President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for Arab and African affairs, met Sudanese General Abdel-Fattah Burhan at a luncheon hosted by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. The meeting came as the United States, Egypt and other intermediaries sought to bring Sudan’s warring parties back to negotiations to end the fighting.

Sudan’s war began in April 2023, when a power struggle between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces erupted into open fighting in Khartoum and elsewhere. Repeated attempts at peace talks in recent months have failed to end the conflict.

Boulos and other Trump administration officials have said they believe a regional agreement remains possible for an immediate humanitarian truce, including certain withdrawals and safe humanitarian corridors. In a social media post, Boulos said the diplomatic efforts aimed to restore security and stability and support reconstruction. He also described a Sudanese-owned national dialogue intended to lead toward civilian government.
