U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday night, October 13, 2026, that Taiwan had agreed to buy 30% of the output from Alaska's planned natural gas pipeline. The pipeline has yet to be built.

Speaking at a rally in Wasilla, Alaska, Trump said Taiwan's purchase commitment would cover the next 20 years. That duration was part of his announcement about the proposed gas purchases.

Taiwanese officials did not immediately comment on Trump's announcement. They had previously acknowledged an intention to purchase liquefied natural gas, or LNG, from Alaska.

The planned pipeline would run 1,300 kilometres, or 800 miles, carrying natural gas from northern Alaska's reserves to the south. There, the gas would be converted into liquefied natural gas.

The project is backed by the U.S. group Glenfarne and the state of Alaska. It still faces technical hurdles and is not expected to become operational before 2030.
