Singapore parliament to scrutinize rail planners' property purchases on Oct. 6
Singapore's parliament will scrutinize a government review of property purchases by officers involved in rail planning on Oct. 6, after a working paper identified purchases near planned stations before their locations became public.

Singapore's parliament will examine the government's review of property purchases by officers involved in rail planning when it sits on Tuesday, Oct. 6. A working paper showed purchases near planned rail stations before the locations of those stations were made public.
Members of parliament submitted 10 questions for oral answer concerning a United States-based research organisation's working paper on civil servants' property purchases. They also submitted a separate written question about the paper.
The working paper has not been peer-reviewed.
Singapore's Public Service Division said in mid-September that it was reviewing the working paper's data and methodology.
On Sept. 25, the Public Service Division said the government was also reviewing property purchases made between 2007 and 2011 by officers involved in rail planning. That review was intended to assess whether actual misconduct had occurred.
Nominated MP Terence Ho asked the prime minister whether stronger safeguards, including rules and penalties, were needed to prevent public officers from using privileged information for material gain for themselves or their family members.
