Joe diGenova has departed an investigation targeting former government officials who scrutinized Trump over the past decade. Those inquiries included Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and Trump’s retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
He had returned to the Justice Department in April and was put in charge of the investigation, whose scope was loosely defined at the time.
Five months later, no charges have been brought. Whether any will follow remains unclear, as does what information investigators have gathered to support the idea that government officials who investigated Trump plotted against him.
DiGenova said his earlier comments had been taken out of context. He maintained that there was ample evidence to support prosecution theories, but said developing the cases takes time and cannot be rushed to meet others’ expectations.
